Alys Beach is white: white masonry walls, white roofs, walled courtyards, with a look drawn from Bermuda. Windows are set deep into thick walls, and many rooms open onto a courtyard through tall glass doors instead of facing the street.

Those deep sills hold sand and salt. If only the glass gets cleaned, the next rain carries what's on the sill down the wall, and on white masonry that shows. So the frames and sills get scrubbed and rinsed along with the glass, and the rinse is filtered water with no soap in it. More on the method under exterior window cleaning.

Courtyards are sheltered, so courtyard glass gets less salt and more humidity. Irrigated plantings in a courtyard tend to spot the doors right next to them, and those spots set over time.
